About me :

I'm drawn to plants and flowers in various stages of life and death in this compost heap of our existence. I feel represented by them, and their processes.

I'm Joan.

I was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Later, I moved to a rural island off the coast of Washington where I lived for many years. My skills and aspiration with a camera grew there, with my first love behind the lens being people in nature. I looked for metaphor in the outlying spaces, the wilds of which mirrored my inner life and those of the people I photographed. The transformations with their vibrant, messy layers. The rhythms of change and growth all reflected back through nature, as a mirror. I began there a personal exploration of environment and identity through this biophilic lens, which continues to imbue my work wherever I am.
